Dialin Access
Last updated:  January 7, 2004

If you are installing an ICON in a remote location with a regular dial telephone line and there is no Internet access, you may connect an auto answer modem to serial port 1 on the ICON or install an "internal" modem in the PC104 stack. When you dial the ICON it will answer the phone and establish a ppp connection just as though it was an ISP (Independent Service Provider). These directions are for an external US Robotics Model 5686 Faxmodem.

First you must connect a PC to your modem and configure for a fixed baud rate as follows:

  1. Set dip switches on the back of the modem to 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 up (off) and  3 and 8 down (on).
  2. Start Hyper Terminal or your serial modem communication program.
  3. Make a new direct connect serial connection on the serial port to which you connected the modem.
  4. Set the baud rate to 115200 for your connection speed.
  5. Type AT and <Enter> and make sure you get an OK response.
  6. Now enter the following command:
  7. AT&F1&B1S32=98S0=1&W
Your modem is now ready for connection to the ICON. Install as follows:
  1. Connect the modem to the first serial port of the ICON with a standard 25 pin male to 9 pin female straight through RS232 modem cable. These can be purchased at any computer hardware store or Radio Shack.
  2. Set dip switches on the back of the modem to  2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8  up (off) and 1 and 4  down (on).
  3. Connect the phone line to the RJ11 connector on the back of the modem.
  4. Connect the modem to the power outlet with the supplied power transformer and turn the modem on.
Before continuing, make sure you have connected your PC to the ICON and have established local communication as described in the "ICON Installation" manual. Then connect in programming mode.
  1. Make sure you have selected the "Program View" tab.
  2. Click the "System Parameter Config" drop down list above the programming white space area and slightly off center to the right.
  3. Click the "Connection" entry.
  4. Use the drop down list to select "Off" for the "Serial 1 type" field and click the "Update" button if it is not already set to off.
  5. Use the "Connection Type" drop down list to select "Modem COM3" and click "OK".
  6. Click the "System Parameter Config" drop down list and select "Password/system".
  7. Use the "Watchdog" drop down list to select "Reset system" and click "OK".
  8. This causes the ICON to reset and your web browser connection to terminate. You may reconnect over ethernet in about one minute if you wish.
Now, when the phone line is dialed, the ICON will answer the modem and allow the remote user to connect. You must set up a "Dialin Networking" connection on the PC that will be used to dial in to the ICON. For Windows:
  1. Follow the directions for your version of Windows to create a new "Dial-Up Network" connection.
  2. For Windows 98 you click "Start", "Programs", "Accessories", "Communications" and finally "Dial-Up Networking".
  3. Double click the "Make New Connection" icon.
  4. Enter a name for your connection and select your configured modem and click "Next".
  5. Enter the phone number and click "Next".
  6. Then click "Finish".
  7. Double click your new connection icon to connect.
  8. Enter a user name of "icon".
  9. Enter a password of "icon".
  10. Then click the "Connect" button.
If all goes well you will be connected to your remote ICON by modem. Now connect to the ICON in the normal manner using the same IP address you used for your local PC to ICON ethernet connection. For example:
